The US announces $88 million in emergency aid to Sudan; World Health Organization calls for more emergency funds to fight disease outbreaks in the region
The United States has announced it will provide an additional $88 million in emergency humanitarian assistance to Sudan.
According to the government, the $88 million will provide emergency food assistance to roughly 1.2 million people across Sudan. The US Agency for International Development adds that in the fiscal year of 2022, the United States has provided more than $371 million in humanitarian assistance to Sudan.
This comes as the World Health Organization has called on the United States and other nations to provide $123.7 million in additional emergency aid to people in Africa. Ibrahima Soce Fall, assistant director-general for emergency responses at WHO, said "the acute food insecurity crisis has triggered a health crisis in the region. Malnutrition is soaring and disease outbreaks, including measles and cholera, are increasing."
Currently the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany are in talks with the World Health Organization to provide further assistance.
According to the World Health Organization, the additional funds given to the organization would prop up healthcare systems in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Sudan, Sudan, & Uganda.
