Heavily Underreported: Taliban agree to allow Chinese state-owned company to build a power plant & oil field in Afghanistan; comes as China seeks to tap into Afghanistan's lithium reserves valued at $1 trillion

Heavily Underreported:
A senior Taliban official has announced that a Chinese state-owned company will construct a power plant and be able to explore for gas in northern Afghanistan. This marks the first official deal between Chinese companies and the Taliban following their takeover of Afghanistan.

The Chinese state-owned company, Yellow River Engineering Consulting Co., Ltd, has agreed with the Taliban to construct a power plant and develop an oil field in Shabarghan, Afghanistan.

In a statement, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said "A Chinese government company [Yellow River Engineering Consluting] and the Ministries of Energy, Mines, and Petroleum have signed a memorandum of understanding for the construction of a power plant and exploration of a gas field in Shabarghan.

Seven months ago, we reported that multiple companies (including yellow river) were working on establishing contracts with the Taliban to conduct business in Afghanistan. Specifically, Yellow River and others sought to tap into Afghanistan's rich lithium reserves, valued at over $1 trillion.
