The Canadian government has announced plans to pursue a digital ID program at the national level.

The announcement came within a document announcing the Canadian governments "Digital Ambitions" over the next few years.

According to the "Digital Ambitions" document, "The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for government services to be accessible and flexible in the digital age. The next step in making services more convenient to access is a federal Digital Identity Program, integrated with pre-existing provincial platforms."

The document also adds that the “Digital Identity Program” will be able facilitate online transactions with the government.

The news comes shortly after the Canadian Bankers Association called for the creation of a federated digital identity program.
