The newly appointed deputy director of police in Culiacán, Sinaloa was assassinated roughly 7 hours after taking his new position.
According to authorities, former deputy director Juan Miguel Silva Alvarado was shot to death while organizing an operation that would review bars and cantinas near the state attorney's office.
Eyewitnesses say that unidentified armed men pulled up to a street corner in two black Suburbans, got out of the vehicles, and executed the former deputy director. Eyewitnesses add that the armed men also subdued and disarmed the other officers accompanying Alvarado.
In a statement, Carlos Alberto Hernandez Leyva, the undersecretary of state public security, acknowledged the murder of Alvarado and said the incident was a direct attack on the deputy director.
