China has accused the United States of launching a cyberattack on a Chinese university that is involved in military research and development.
According to Chinese officials, Northwestern Polytechnical University reported a computer breach in June of 2022. This led to an investigation by the governments cyber security agency.
Foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning says the Chinese government has traced the attacks to the National Security Agency (NSA). In a statement, Ning said, "The actions by the United States seriously endanger China’s national security. China strongly condemns their actions. The United States should immediately stop using Its advantages to steal secrets and attack other countries."
The American Embassy in Beijing has not released a comment following multiple requests.
Digging deeper: Northwestern Polytechnical University is on a U.S. government "entity list" that limits its access to American technology. The Pentagon says that the university develops technology for the Chinese military, including aerial and underwater drones + missile technology.
